Vote for UIL's all-century team

The University Interscholastic League is conducting an online poll for nominations to its all-century teams. The UIL is celebrating its 100th anniversary of existence this year.

First up for voting will be the all-century football and volleyball teams. Prominent on the football list is Sherman native Billy Don Jackson, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive end in his prep days who went on to UCLA and bounced back from legal problems to play professionally in the USFL. Jackson was a high school All-American and was considered the nation's top recruit in 1977.

Also chosen on the UIL's all-century football ballot at running back is Celina's Jarrod Martin, who was a star running back, safety, and kicker on the Bobcats' 1995 Class 2A state championship team — the second of what has become eight titles altogether for the Bobcats.

In volleyball, two players are on the ballot from Texomaland: Robin Mays of Sherman and Kelcie Miller of Collinsville.

Voting for the football and volleyball all-century teams will take place through Nov. 7. The UIL will also conduct polls for other sports when they come into season. Click on the following links to vote:

Billy Don Jackson : 10/4/2009
If ever one player could control a football game, it was Papa Jackson. He was super at defensive end when the opposition had the ball, and played offense at tight end. How good was he? When his class at Sherman graduated, Jackson started for UCLA less than 90 days later. Little is said about Jackson's basketball career. He was a power-forward for the Bearcats and controlled the paint under the basket. In Sherman he was 'the man', but when he got to the West Coast he got in with the wrong crowd and thus began his legal problems. He definitely belongs on the All-Century team.. God Bless you Papa, wherever you are.

Thanks for the correction. That was my mistake; I read the UIL list wrong. He's up for a vote as running back.

Where is Billy Don Jackson these days?

Jarrod Martin : 9/30/2009
Bill, just a correction. Martin played running back, safety, and kicker for the Bobcats. Gary Don Moore was the QB for the 1995 state championship team.
