SHS head football job: Let the speculation begin

Now that Drew Young has hung up his whistle as head football coach and athletic director at Sherman High School, the task begins for superintendent Dr. Al Hambrick and the Sherman school board to hire a replacement.

The thinking is the new coach will be in place by June 26, which will be Young's last day at SHS. Since the Bearcats did not conduct spring football practice and will start two-a-days on Aug. 3, time is of the essence.

Several potential candidates are out there who could fit logically with the Bearcats. I have no idea of their interest in the job, but they do have strong Sherman ties.

One is Pottsboro's Matt Poe, who was Sherman's offensive coordinator before taking over the Cardinals in 2006. Another is Callisburg's Jerry Bomar, who is a Sherman native, was a finalist for the SHS job in 2003 and has plenty of big-school coaching experience. Both of these coaches led their respective schools to historic heights in 2008.

Pure conjecture on my part, of course, but it's always fun to speculate.

Let's hope the district avoids the embarrassing debacle of six years ago, when the winning candidate backed out after one day, the hiring of a headhunter firm proved fruitless, and Young was ultimately promoted as the fallback option.

For those that argue the point of Academics over Athletics please tap your brakes. Successful Athletic programs also foster successful Academic programs. That is the way you motivate some kids, through Athletics and the hopes of playing ball at a Division 1 school that they would never have had an opportunity to get into much less pay for any other way. When was the last time we had someone be successful in a D-1 program? We need a leader that has the long term interest of our program in mind, to put out successful atheletes that move on to the next level, mentally and physically. If you start having that kind of success, it filters down into the younger kids coming up to focus on grades so they are "allowed to play".

Coach Wanted: Sherman Born and Sherman Bread! : 6/28/2009
I'm with Keepin' It Real! Tired of LOSING to Denison and years of SMOKE SCREENS and BUTT KISSING! Don't hire someone from the staff now, NOTHING WILL CHANGE! TEXAS COACH FOR A TEXAS TEAM...SHERMAN COACH FOR A SHERMAN TEAM! One could say,"Look at Sherman's record over the past few years." Answer: The only teams Sherman hasn't played is Saint Mary's and Texoma Christian School. All the pre-District teams that were scheduled were having down years. Even our kids know this, they talk about it. WE WANT A WINNING TEAM! WE WANT JERRY BOMAR! WE WANT BOMAR BACK IN SHERMAN!

QUOTE: "Bomar? : 6/2/2009 Just say no to Jerry Bomar. The guy had a bad rep even before his son pulled off the shanagans at ou. humpty" You'd probably be the first parent he bounced out of his office...humpty! What kind of name is that anyway...humpty? Humpty...Dumpty! Also, Why bring up his son? His son isn't being considered...Humpty Dumpty!

Poe is a Pirate : 6/28/2009
Poe is trying for the 2nd time to jump ship on his team in a few months. He trying to leave Pboro at a time when they are predicted to have a down season. Be careful what you wish for Sherman, You just might get it...and worse.

Keepin' It Real!

Sherman couldn't handle Bomar! : 6/28/2009
Let's say what everybody already knows: Sherman folk with money want someone in there at the helm that's a puppet. That they can control. Bomar isn't that type. Bomar is an in your face guy that football is top priority! He can't be bought and sold and if Daddy came in crying, Bomar would bounce him out on his fat A*! Sherman parents couldn't handle Bomar, though the team needs him. I say YES to BOMAR! We don't need another umpteen years of playing easy opponents to make records look good, then bomb in the playoffs! Or daddy's paying for kids spots.

Keepin' It Real!

Bomar? : 6/24/2009
TOTALLY AGREE!! They defintely should check his win/loss record while he was at Grand Prairie. How many district titles did he win? ZERO Now this was from a coach who was going to take that football program and completely turn it around. Yeah right! Run Sherman, Run!

No Bomar Fan

In order for sherman to make strides in all of their athletic programs boys and girls they need to bring in more diversity into the program people who understand how to reach out to all kids and not just the ones who look like the coaches. They need to understand that in order to compete you have to let the coaches coach without your hand in their back pocket cause lil johnny is not getting any playing time the best players have to be on the field at all times not just the kids whose parents have money …

Don't understand : 6/17/2009
The problem is what are you going to do with the coaches already under contract. Coach Youngs late resignation means a new coach can not bring his own staff in which limits interest from good coaches. As far as TAKS scores and football, why is it we think that football restricts our learning ability? That is the thinking that will keep us where we are now.

Academics : 6/16/2009
Coach Young's retirement has caused a all of the hiring of new staff at SHS to be put on hold. Great potential staff members are being over looked because they can not coach...When asked the answer given to parents regarding staff openings is...we have to wait and see who the new coach wants on his staff. I hear that SHS has made tremedous gains this year on the annual TAKS test....what is more important...we all like a winning team on Friday night but what makes the biggest difference in 99% of students lives. Friday night success or success in the classroom. Please make sure that the staff that is hired are the very best in the classroom...not just on the football field.

Hard to find : 6/15/2009
The restraints put on this job because of Youngs late resignation will keep the GOOD COACH applicants count very low. Some have already inquired and excused themselves. This not a good job right now and it will take a lot of work for someone to turn it into a good place to coach.

People, lets be positive about the tasks that is before us. This is the kind of negative talk via blogs that may result in a good coach or others not wanting to come to Sherman. Think about what you are doing as you blog.

A Request

: 6/14/2009
This type of bashing on this blog is why Sherman Athletics is what it is. On Poe leaving Pottsboro I think he has a firm grip on his program and the facilites is and will be the best in the area. In addition sometime money is secondary to HAPPINESS for yourself and family along with community support as Coach Poe has attained at Pottsboro. The Poe pedigree goes a long way so I think he will be attractive to many jobs be it 2A or 5A when and if he chooses. As one poster said there is a whole lot of bleacher coach's in Sherman. I am sure Hambrick being athletic background will do a great job as he is paid to do and suggest the right candidate for the board to review. I am thinking the board is a board , not an administrative body in hiring and firing. Let the Sup do his job.

Misunderstood : 6/14/2009
No one said academics should not be a high priority, but if athletics is not a high priority do you really think we will get a good coach in here. Academics and athletics can go hand in hand, they do at successful schools all over the state. If they are not a priority to be successful then don't waste money, just play intramurals. Maybe that is what the School Board wants, we will see.

Unhappy Green

- : 6/14/2009
I would certainly hope that our School Board places ACADEMICS as a higher priority than atheltics.

There's the problem : 6/14/2009
A quote from one of our wonderful School Board members "athletics is not a priority". I think I see the problem.

Hear Chad Rogers of Snyder called and can not get a call back. All sports have been very succesfull in Snyder. 70-30 record and 5 Dist Championships. 2 State Sem of course he is kin to me. He does have Sherman ties as well.

Don't guess long time Denison, current coach at Leonard Coach Guess has expressed any interest? Had alot to do with why Denison has been such a successful program for over a decade.

Big Problems : 6/7/2009
Has anyone been inside the halls of Sherman High lately? I was recently...not much of anything that resembles an athlete walking through the halls. No big kids, no muscled up kids, just average kids. Average kids that bloggers are asking the coaches to discipline more, take care of facilities more, and motivate more. Where are these kids' parents? Isn't that the parents job to teach respect, discipline, motivation, etc...perhaps we as parents need to do a better job parenting, and do less coaching from the stands. Yes, you who are booing and second guessing the staff, you are disrespectful and your kids are watching you. Since some of you have all the answers, get your education degree and apply for the job...I'm sure it is much tougher than it looks. For those griping about the money, the city voted down a tax ratification election in the fall. Sherman ISD has cut numerous jobs and it is my understanding that they have had to cut some coaching jobs as well. The people of Sherman have spoken.

Former Player, Current Parent

: 6/7/2009
sherman ain't gonna pay no coach 100k. never has never will. it'll be well under 70k who ever takes the job will have to because of the opportunity to be a head man in a 4a school. that's why it'll be no big name. athletics has never been the priority here that it is at other schools. just look at the facilitys their sub par. if they got new facilitys they would not take care of them just, like now they take em for granted. poe won't apply because of ties to former staff here. this could be the thing that finally blows this school board apart and gets new life in there. it could be interesting!

Musings : 6/4/2009
Why would Poe leave Pottsboro where he has everything he wants, addition to fieldhouse, turf on field this summer. He can stay forever and make 70K or go to Sherman and maybe last 3-4 years at 100k. He would leave for a championship as all coaches think they can win the big one. My thinking is stay in P-town, might win one there. In Sherman you have no shot, to many politics and school in turmoil. Last 2a to go to Sherman was a guy by the name of Moore, went from 0-10 to 6-4 at 4a level and they said he couldn't coach, funny ain't it.

for consideration : 6/4/2009
Some names to consider, in no particular order: Matt Poe -- Pottsboro Kyle Story -- Decatur Michael Young -- Lake Dallas Weldon Nelms -- Wimberley Scott Ponder -- Wichita Falls Rider Mike Vallery -- Kilgore John Crawford -- Coppell A.D. (former Plano East and Tatum) James Morton (mark him off -- he just left Lubbock Monterey for Midland Lee Johnny Ringo -- even though he just had an o for 10 at Plano East Bobby Reyes

1. No coach cares about the stadium...they are all 100 yards from endzone to endzone. A coach wants players and community support. 2. Poe has done well and should be a candidate, but what does he have to gain by moving to Sherman? 3. For all of the "big name" lovers, how did G.A. Moore work out for you at Sherman? 4. Did not every great coach at some point start out as an assistant or an unattractive bio page in a program that no one but their wife chose to read. 5. Southlake, Allen, Duncanville, Denton Ryan, and even Denison a year ago all had football coaches who were not the AD...I believe success in multiple sports can be achieved without tying the two jobs together.

To Be Fair : 6/3/2009
White did not come directly from Highland Park, he was an assistant at Odessa Permian before joining Denison's staff as offensive coordinator. It should also be pointed out that White was never a head coach before taking over at Denison. Poe is an intriguing candidate. He knows the program as a former coordinator and turned around a program at rock-bottom — 0-10 the year before he got there to the state semifinals in three seasons. There are a lot worse resumes than that.

Jason Della Rosa

: 6/3/2009
Poe from Pottsboro? Not. Get a coach from a larger school, like Denison did with White...Highland Park!

?

Sherman Stadium : 6/3/2009
Sherman needs a new stadium to attract top coaches. Just look at Van Alstyne for what a modern stadium looks like SISD !! Sherman and Denison live in the 1950's when it comes to stadium facilities.

Great time to move on for Poe........lost a LOT of talent.....not so much coming up.

This is great : 6/2/2009
I personally wish Coach Young good luck, but this is definetely the right thing to happen to Sherman Athletics. The School Board and Mr. Hambrick must open the position up and put no resrictions on the new person coming in. It is time for some major changes to be made. School Board and Mr. Hambrick you can not mess this up there are no excuses. This new hire needs to have had a lot of success and a great track record, take no flyers on someone who has potentional. Take your time and make sure you hit a homerun on the hire.
