McCloud's absence in WCWS is curious
The notable absence of Texomaland native and Georgia Lady Bulldog
sophomore pitcher Sarah McCloud in the Women's College World Series in
Oklahoma City was puzzling to me, to say the least.
Yes, McCloud started and gave up three runs in the first inning of
Georgia's first game against Washington on Sunday, and she was given a
quick hook. And yes, freshman Erin Arevalo did pitch four innings of
scoreless relief in what became the Lady Dawgs' 9-8 win to force a
second "if necessary" game against U-Dub.
But McCloud did not pitch in the nightcap on Sunday night, during which
Arevalo was torched for a grand slam in the first inning and an
exhausted senior ace Christie Hamilton, with 200-plus pitches and a
split fingernail under her belt, was called upon in relief. Hamilton
gave a yeoman performance to keep the game close but ran out of gas in
the seventh, to be replaced by ... Arevalo.
Does this signify writing on the wall? To me, it might as well be a big
freaking neon sign. (I can say "freaking" because this is a blog.)
It just seems to me a starter with a 17-2 record leading up to the WCWS deserves a little more confidence from her coaches.
