Celina-Ferris opener is set

According to Celina head football coach and athletic director Butch Ford on Thursday night in Denton, the Bobcats will open their 2009 football season ... on a Thursday night in Denton.

Ford says the eight-time state-champion and 2008 state runner-up Bobcats will take on the Ferris Yellowjackets on Thursday, August 27 at the University of North Texas' Fouts Field, in the 2009 Fellowship of Christian Athletes Kickoff Classic.

Celina typically opens its football season on a neutral field, mainly because it's doggone hard for the Bobcats to find somebody willing to play them home and away. Last August, they drove to Temple for a 66-0 rout of Lytle, which begged out of a return match "for budgetary reasons" (my emphasis).

Ferris had an open date to fill after playing a California school, Sutter Union, in the same spot last year in Mesquite.

Ford made the announcement during Celina's 13-2 baseball victory over Lake Worth in five innings in Game 1 of the Class 3A Region II playoffs at Ryan High School.
