LIVE BLOG -- Sherman vs. Newman Smith
Here we are at Plano's John Clark Stadium, ready to bring you
observations on the Sherman-Carrollton Newman Smith game in the
bi-district round of the Class 4A Division I playoffs.
More than an hour to kickoff and the stadium is virtually empty.
Sherman is the home team. I imagine the Bearcats will represent well in
the fan department. I hear Newman Smith doesn't travel well, but with
the season they're having, the fans should be coming out of the
woodwork.
Bearcat fans are running late because of construction in McKinney, I
was told. And indeed, Newman Smith fans are out in force to see their
team in the playoffs for the first time in 26 years.
Sherman wins the coin toss and defers. The Bearcats will have a 15-mph wind at their backs to start the game.
Eric Hosek kicks it through the end zone.
Newman Smith converts two first downs, but the Bearcat defense stops
big running back Randall Joyner six inches short of a first down and
the Cats take over at their own 43.
On second-and-9, after a strong 17-yard run by Zac Whitfield, Madison
Carter lofts the ball deep, and Joyner intercepts. That sets up a
95-yard drive closed out by a keeper from the 3 by Aldo Quiroga, and
the PAT by Philippe Ichter gives Newman Smith first blood, 7-0, at the
3:55 mark of the first quarter.
But Sherman comes right back and a 45-yard Whitfield run sets up the
equalizer. Carter rolls right and throws back across to a wide-open
Dylon Beamesderfer, and Hosek's PAT knots it at 7-7 with 1:40 to go in
the quarter.
The Trojans go back on the move as the first period ends with Newman
Smith at the Sherman 33-yard line. The Trojans get down to the 8 before
the Cats get a stop, holding them to a 25-yard Ichter field goal two
minutes into the second quarter. It's now 10-7 Smith.
Then the Bearcats strike. They go 80 yards in four plays and
Beamesderfer turns in a big-time play for Sherman's first lead of the
night. He catches a pass from Carter, bounces off a tackler, stiff-arms
another and dives for the pylon for a 42-yard scoring play. Hosek kicks
the Cats to a 14-10 lead at the 8:41 mark.
After an exchange of punts, a strong punt return by Al Lasker with a
late-hit penalty tacked-on gives the Trojans excellent field position,
and they cash in with Braxton Bearden's 9-yard run with 3:13 left to
regain the lead, 17-14.
Sherman moves out to midfield, but Whitfield is dropped for a 2-yard
loss, the Bearcats are called for a false start, and a fourth-down pass
to Geoff Hooker is too high with 55 seconds left. Quiroga moves the
Trojans into field goal range, and Ichter makes a 31-yarder on the
final play of the half for a 20-14 halftime lead.
At the intermission, Smith has 241 total yards and 11 first downs to
Sherman's 208 and eight. Whitfield has seven carries for 86 yards, and
of course, Beamesderfer has both Sherman TDs for 45 yards on his only
two catches. Carter is 6-of-12 passing for 74 yards.
The Cats are doing a good job slowing down Joyner and Quiroga on the
ground -- each has 34 yards -- but Quiroga is 8-of-11 for 137 yards.
One of his three incompletions was a spike to stop the clock before the
half-ending field goal.
Sherman and Newman Smith trade scores in the early part of the third
quarter. The Trojans drive 56 yards for a Joyner score, but Whitfield
replies for a 67-yard sprint down the visitors' sideline to keep the
Cats within 26-20.
But the Trojans come right back, moving 77 yards on seven plays, and
Quiroga keeps for the score. Both times, the Trojans go for two and are
stopped, so the margin is only 11 with 5:51 to go in the third.
Sherman gets a first down on a Robert Fallon reception but is forced to
punt. Newman Smith takes it 80 yards this time, and Joyner runs for the
score out of the wildcat formation. It's now 39-21 with 10:17 left in
the Bearcats' season, barring a miracle finish.
And it's all but over. Jeremy Stallworth intercepts Carter and returns
it 27 yards, making it 46-21 with 9:47 to go. The Cats are headed to
another bi-district loss.
Thor Long directs an 81-yard TD drive, with a short toss to Whitfield
resulting in a 25-yard TD making it 49-28 with 5:04 to go. But the
Smith starters stay in for one more drive, and Joyner punches it in
from the 1 with 3:20 left. It's now 56-28.
Long scores one more on a keeper to make it 56-35, and that is your
final score.
