The Denison and Sherman Public libraries want to help children get in the Christmas spirit. Both places will have Christmas and winter-themed activities for children to participate in this weekend.

The Denison Public Library is helping children get ready for Santa’s arrival with a workshop. Santa’s workshop will be open from 4-6 p.m. Fridays leading up to Christmas and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays leading up to Christmas.

The workshop will have special hours after Christmas. The workshop will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 29.

“Santa’s workshop is in a tent located next to Denison on Ice,” Denison Library Programs Coordinator Joyce Ullah said. “There will be crafts and Christmas ornaments for children to decorate at the tent so that children that are not old enough to skate or who want to take a break from skating will have something to do.”

Last year, Santa’s workshop was located at the Senior Citizen’s Center in Denison, but Ullah said the workshop did not get a lot of foot traffic because it was inside.

“So we moved it outside,” she said. “This is geared towards all ages, but specifically for those in pre-K through fifth grade. We also have somethings that are more complex for the older children.”

Ullah said the library will be making snow at Santa’s workshop.

“We try to do things with other city departments,” she said. “We want to support Denison Parks and Rec just like they support us. We also like to support Denison Main Street.

Denison Library has ended its fall semester of children’s activities. The spring semester of the children’s programs Babygarten, Young and Restless, and Rhythm and Rhyme will begin meeting again on Jan. 10.

Sherman Public library will have its Christmas story time this weekend. Parents can bring children to the MLK Building at 1003 N. East Street, across from the library’s temporary location in Sherman from 3-4 p.m. Saturday.

“We will be having a Christmas puppet show and craft for the children to do,” Sherman Public Library Children’s Librarian Allie Barton said. “We will be making Christmas gifts to take to the residents at Texoma Healthcare Center in Sherman.”

Children will also be given the opportunity to take home a Christmas-themed book.

“Giving away books is very important to the library,” Barton said. “We have a great selection and want to help children learn to read. Having a themed day like this kind of helps the season come a live for them.”

A second special winter story time will be held from 3-4 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Sherman library. Children will have the opportunity to pick out a winter-themed book.

Story time at the library will begin again at 10 a.m. Jan. 16-17. Baby and me for children ages 0-18 months will begin again at 10 a.m. Jan. 15.
