When I first heard about a grilled cheese restaurant opening, I couldn’t fully grasp how it would succeed with just grilled cheese. The Downtown Grilled Cheese company is located at 113 N. Travis St. in Sherman. They are closed Sundays and are open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

My guest and I were the first customers of the day when we went to eat. Much to my surprise, the owner was the person who greeted us and welcomed us to his restaurant. He was nice and personable. He explained to us how the process worked and also told us about the specials of the day.

Facility: I love the building, it’s very nostalgic looking and clean. As you approach the counter, there are menus available. There is also a menu board on the wall. On the counter is a basket of Pop Pop Popcorn. The owner of this restaurant told me that Pop Pop Popcorn was his son’s.

Food: By the time the owner got done explaining everything that they had on special that day, I wanted to order one of everything. Once I came back to my senses, I ordered the avocado pepper jack grilled cheese ($8.95). This is a grilled cheese which includes avocados, jalapeños, sweet red peppers, pepper jack and mozzarella cheese. I cut the jalapeños and red peppers. The sandwich comes with chips and a pickle spear. The bread is sourdough, and I’m not sure but it tasted like rosemary butter was used to grill the sandwich. I ordered a Dr Pepper to drink with my lunch. On my sandwich, the blend of cheese with avocado and that hint of rosemary was plenty of flavor combinations to make this sandwich amazing.

My guest ordered the Ooey Gooey Brisket Grilled Cheese ($10.95). It was also served with chips and a pickle spear. It was served on the same sourdough bread with the same rosemary butter. Imagine gooey melted cheese with moist smoked brisket. Yum. This grilled cheese had American, Swiss, Gouda, cheddar and mozzarella. With both sandwiches, I noticed that the bread was toasted. It was not mushy and I really think that enhanced the whole flavor experience with the sandwiches.

By the time we got halfway through our meal this place was packed. Everyone being greeted and orders being taken promptly. One of the neatest things that I noticed, is that they have added picnic tables to the side of the building so if you prefer to sit outside you can certainly do so.

I would have liked to have ordered the soup but it was still kind of warm outside. I will go back when it’s cooler.

Final thoughts: Overall this was a great experience. The atmosphere is great and the owner knows his business. In all the reviews I have done, this is only the second owner, I have encountered, that I know of.

So if you were thinking this is just a grilled cheese place, you are wrong. It’s a total experience, that you really must try. Hats off to the owner, I hope your hard work pays off big.
