Errors happen in any endeavor When a caller says, "There's something wrong in the newspaper today," our switchboard folks appear to automatically respond, "Hold please, I'll ring the newsroom."
It's not always the newsroom's mistake, but we don't mind trying to track down the source of the problem if we can. Still, a few more "I see a mistake in today's paper" and a few less "You stupid idiots!" coming as a greeting would be nice. The "idiots" to whom callers refer are not likely to include the person taking the call, and it tends to sour the stomach sometime when greeted that way early in the morning.
Surely no one sets out to make a mistake in any endeavor, but humans are likely to make them, nonetheless. Witness the number of missed calls by umpires in this year's Major League Baseball playoffs.
Among several goofs on a single page in Wednesday's edition of the Herald Democrat was the United States Trivia quiz which (in this case, embarrassingly) runs as part of our Newspapers In Education program. It appeared on page B8, and the list of answers given on a quiz about Alaska was apparently an answer list that had appeared in an earlier trivia quiz and had nothing to do with these questions.
The same puzzle appears in today's edition, on page A5, and, hopefully, with a little more scrutiny involved, the Alaska answers are now correct.
Of course, with such a major foul-up, there were fewer complaints about the same photo caption on Wednesday's B8 appearing twice under different pictures. That was a newsroom error, and we apologize to the Sherman Symphony Orchestra officers, correctly named in the story below the picture.
